John Herdman Keeps the Door Open for New Faces in Indonesia’s National Team
Indonesia’s squad for the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup may serve as the foundation for the team’s next challenges, but head coach John Herdman has made it clear that the door remains open for new players. His focus is not only on maintaining the core of the squad but also on finding fresh talent capable of strengthening the national team.
Herdman recently guided Indonesia to the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup title, ending a long wait for a major trophy at senior international level. One of the biggest factors behind the achievement was his approach to building a united squad. Rather than relying solely on tactics, the English coach emphasized adaptability, confidence, togetherness, and a strong sense of belonging among the players.
The importance of team spirit is something Herdman has experienced before during his time with Canada. His work there helped create a stronger mentality within the squad and eventually contributed to the country's return to the World Cup in 2022. He is now attempting to establish a similar culture with Indonesia, believing that a close-knit group can make a significant difference when facing difficult moments in major tournaments.
Despite placing great importance on team unity, Herdman is not closing the squad to other potential additions. Several Indonesian players have yet to receive opportunities at international level, while key figures such as captain Jay Idzes could also return after recovering from injury. Herdman has also indicated that players performing well in the Super League will continue to receive attention as he assesses his options.
His commitment to scouting extends beyond the established names. Players such as Mees Hilgers, Emiliano Jonathans, and Marselino remain among those on his radar, while other emerging talents are also being monitored. Herdman regularly follows domestic matches in Indonesia, giving him the opportunity to identify players who could develop into future members of the national team.
